Bald Eagle Info
The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus), our national bird, is the only eagle unique to North America. The bald eagle's scientific name signifies a sea (halo) eagle (aeetos) with a white (leukos) head. At one time, the word "bald" meant "white," not hairless. Pages include Eagle Poems, Eagles of the World, Zoo Photos and Wisconsin Photos.

Bald Eagles of San Juan Island
On the west coast of San Juan island, bald eagles have never been hard to find. We have posted some of the better pictures that we have taken of bald eagles and their nests. Bald eagles generally roost near water on a high stick platform. The nest, usually placed near the top of a tall conifer, is quite substantial. Every year, the eagles add new branches to the nest. The nest that our eagles have built is now somewhat over six feet across.
